Muslim in America

For six months, photographer Robert Nickelsberg followed the senior graduating class of 2011 at the Al-Noor School, New York’s largest Islamic private school with more than 623 students.  After the attacks at the World Trade Center, the preK-through-12th grade school became a focal point for journalists seeking the American Muslim perspective after 9/11. In the wake of the attacks, many Muslims across the city were harassed, spat on and beaten, confronted with religious epithets, and had their cars pounded — including students whom Nickelsberg photographed.
