Filipino Wins NJ Election

Rolando Lavarro’s victory in last Tuesday’s (November 8) city council elections in Jersey City made history, as he was the first Filipino American to win an elected position in the city. Filipinos–estimated at 15,000 in the third largest city in the state–have filled appointed positions in the past, including deputy mayor and commissioners, but this time victory came through an election, and in a city where Filipinos have settled since the 1970s.

In the past, Filipinos ran against each other and lost to the “Filipino vote.” This time, one candidate ran and won the election.
