Irish see red over honor for Nast

Thomas Nast created the enduring image of Santa Claus and gave Uncle Sam his beard, but the great caricaturist doesn’t belong in New Jersey’s Hall of Fame, says the state’s Ancient Order of Hibernians(AOH), a Catholic Irish American organization. According to the organization’s president, Nast was an anti-Irish, anti-Catholic bigot.

“His cartoons portrayed them in the most stereotypical and unflattering of ways. It is hard to believe that anyone with such a prejudice towards a specific nationality and faith would be singled out for praise.”
