Program aims at opening elite school doors

Last year, not a single student from MS 80 in the Bronx was accepted to any of New York City’s eight elite public high schools. According to the office of the Bronx borough president, less than 6% of students living in the Bronx attended any of those high schools, including the Bronx High School of Science.

To change those numbers, the Science Schools Initiative began providing free Saturday prep classes for the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) at MS 80 at the end of last October. The organization is a prep service based in Washington Heights that provides free classes and tutoring to low-income families who cannot afford the often expensive test prep programs.

The program at MS 80 is the first of its kind at a Bronx school.
