Marshal of the 2012 Greek

Parade in New York City.

Greek News reports that

Menendez was chosen because

of his support for Cyprus and Greek national causes.

The President of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, Elias Tsekerides, noted that Senator Robert Menendez exemplifies American Democratic values regarding freedom and human rights, as well as the Hellenic ideals of Greek revolution that provided Greece, the birthplace of democracy, its freedom and independence from the Ottoman Empire. He has been a commanding voice and advocate of our issues throughout his service in the House and Senate.

The Democratic US Senator from New Jersey in his remarks thanked the Hellenic Federation for the high honor and reaffirmed that he will continue fighting for Cyprus, until the boots of the last Turkish soldier withdraw from the island. He also said he would continue to back efforts for a solution of the dispute over FYROM’s name, a solution which will respect Greek history and safeguard the independence of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Later this month, leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities will meet to hammer out an agreement on core issues on governance and power-sharing, property rights, territory and citizenship, as both sides try to reunify the island of Cyprus.

The UN facilitated talks began in 2008 with the aim of eventually setting up a federal government with a single international personality, with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot constituent states of equal status.

The 74th Greek Independence Day Parade will take place on Fifth Avenue, starting at 64th and continuing to 79th Street on Sunday, March 25, 2012.
