Co-Directors of CCEM Named

New leadership for the Center for Community and Ethnic Media at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism has been announced by Dean Sarah Bartlett.

ccem-logo-wufooKaren Pennar has been named co-director of CCEM, with responsibility for the Center’s editorial content and services. Pennar is editor of, the Center’s flagship website.

Jehangir Khattak will become co-director with responsibility for outreach. As part of his community-building efforts, he will oversee the Ippies, the annual journalism awards ceremony honoring excellent work from this important non-mainstream sector.

This year’s Ippies, the 13th year the awards are being presented, will be held Thursday, June 11 at the CUNY J-School.

The co-directors will work together to develop the Center’s training programs and its strategic plan. They replace Garry Pierre-Pierre, who stepped down as executive director of CCEM in early January.

Dean Bartlett also announced that Jennifer Cheng, who edits stories for the site and assists with the Ippies and other Center projects, is being promoted to associate editor.
