A Different Sort of May Day

May Day, often a celebration of workers’ rights, took on “a new meaning,” at New York’s Union Square, the Amsterdam News reports, as hundreds gathered for the traditional May 1 gathering.

While the rally is usually held to bring notice to labor and immigration rights, the recent death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore shifted the theme to police brutality.

People held signs that said “Black Lives Matter” and “Baltimore: An Uprising Not a Riot.” Participants said they were also marching for other police brutality victims including Eric Garner and Michael Brown.

Amsterdam News Editor Nayaba Arinde captured a number of powerful images at the rally.
