On the asphalt of the Prospect Park park drive Saturday morning, the usual bikers and joggers weren’t alone. Nearly 1,000 people came to the park for Gaza 5K, a run sponsored by the UNRWA – USA organization, a nonprofit that supports the work done by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) on behalf of Palestinian refugees.

The event helped raise $169,000 which will go toward UNRWA’s Community Mental Health Program, which supports children in Gaza who have suffered from violence, the loss of family members and the destruction of their homes. Through school counseling, group sessions and even home counseling, the program helps children cope with the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder, some of which include bed-wetting, poor concentration, eating disorders, sleeping disorders, irritability, and hyperactivity.

Next month, UNRWA-USA will sponsor another run in Chicago, followed by others in Washington D.C. and San Francisco.

Marco Poggio was in Brooklyn to watch the run.
