Following the election of the first Sikh mayor in New Jersey last month, the state could have the country’s first Sikh attorney general.

Gov.-elect Phil Murphy has nominated Gurbir Grewal, who currently serves as the prosecutor of Bergen County, the most populous county in New Jersey. In a story on the announcement, News India Times included a statement from Vin Gopal, who became the first Indian-American elected to the state senate in last month’s election.

“This is an historic moment for the State of New Jersey. I want to commend the Governor-Elect for nominating someone who is not only eminently qualified, but who will bring a perspective to the office that is diverse and long-overdue.”
