The celebrity chef Vikas Khanna came to America 11 years ago with just a few hundred dollars in his pocket. After years washing dishes in hole-in-the-wall Indian restaurants and handing out flyers, he has risen to the pinnacle of his profession as executive chef at the Michelin-starred Junoon restaurant, and even cooked for the Obamas at a fund-raiser last month. But he hasn’t forgotten the tough times, when he sometimes relied on soup kitchens for sustenance. In the video, Khanna also demonstrates a quick and delicious recipe for a tamarind-spiked vegetable stir-fry.
