Redistricting threatens Brooklyn seat

A fight is brewing over where the blade will fall as the lines of two New York Congressional districts are being redrawn. The redistricting could break up numerous black voting blocks, and lead to a loss of political representation by and for African Americans.

The latest census data shows the black population of Brooklyn shrinking and shifting to the south and east. Boroughwide, the 2010 census shows that Brooklyn’s black population fell six percent. The New York State Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reappointment (LATFOR) will hold hearings on the redistricting once they draft proposed boundaries. Governor Andrew Cuomo has said that he will veto any redistricting plan presented by LATFOR, in favor of one produced by an independent commission.
