State Sen. José Peralta emphatically stated that he hasn’t done anything wrong, he isn’t under investigation, and he will march ahead in his campaign for Queens borough president.

Peralta confidently repeated that he is calm. “My eight years of work – six as an assemblyman and two as a senator – speak for themselves,” he said in reference to his name being included with those of eight other senators who were secretly recorded by former state Sen. Shirley Huntley, who was recently charged with corruption.

Peralta spoke exclusively with El Diario-La Prensa, and indicated that his lawyers discussed the issue with federal prosecutors. “They said I wasn’t under investigation,” he said.

Peralta’s name was included on a list that was made public by a federal judge who revealed the names of nine politicians Huntley secretly recorded between June and August 2012 as part of an agreement with the FBI.

The senator reiterated that nothing inappropriate was said during his conversations with Huntley.

“I was surprised just like the rest of the world when the news first came out,” he expressed.

Describing himself as an honest man, Peralta said the matter will not harm his campaign for Queens borough president.

“The community knows I have served them, improving schools, their standard of living, and creating jobs. I’ve received a lot of support from the community; it’s a positive sign for myself and for the campaign. I have to keep moving forward,” he added.

Huntley was sentenced to one year in prison on Thursday, May 9, in federal court for embezzlement and mail fraud conspiracy.
