City Neglects Bronx as Tourist Destination

No visitor to New York City seems to have trouble finding the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building. When it comes to discovering attractions in the Bronx, however, tourists become confused.

“From what I know of the Bronx, only the zoo is there,” said Radu Oros, a Romanian man visiting the city. “Everything interesting about New York is in Manhattan.”

Promotion of the Bronx as a tourist destination is so poor in Manhattan that in the Information Centers in Times Square there are no informational flyers about the borough, except in the city’s Official Visitor Guide.

Mexican entrepreneur José Resendis, who has been visiting New York as a tourist for a number of years, has never visited the Bronx or any other borough, because “all the information I have is on sights in Manhattan. To be honest, I don’t have information on interesting places I could visit in the Bronx, and that’s why I’ve never gone.”

Alexandra Maruri, director of MC Bronx Historical Tours, was the one who brought the issue to light. Her company organizes trips to cultural sites in the borough of salsa. Maruri blames the hotels in Manhattan for not promoting the Bronx.

“It’s a problem,” said a concierge at the Marriott Marquis who preferred to remain anonymous. “I live in the Bronx and when tourists ask me about it I recommend the zoo, the Botanical Garden, and Yankee Stadium; but we don’t have flyers that provide more detailed information.”

The visitors centers around Times Square aren’t much help either. At one of the busiest at 1560 Broadway, Jacob, one of the receptionists, said that all the information they offer is on Manhattan, “because the tourist sights are concentrated here.”

“When a tourist asks about a specific borough, the only thing we can give him is a map,” said Jacob.

Nor was there any information on the Bronx at the visitor center on 51st Street and Seventh Avenue, except for the flyer from Maruri’s company.

“When tourists ask me about other boroughs outside of Manhattan, I just recommend Queens and Brooklyn, because I don’t know much about the Bronx,” said Tatiana, one of the managers.

Official Visitor Guide does promote the Bronx

The only information on the Bronx at the visitor’s center on 51st Street appears in the city’s Official Visitor Guide, which mentions Arthur Avenue in Little Italy, the Grand Concourse, Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, Yankee Stadium, and the Bronx Museum.

Maruri complained that throughout 2013, the city promoted the Bronx as a tourist destination just once. NYC & Company, the New York tourism agency, advertised the Bronx and other boroughs at the International Tourism Fair ITB in Berlin in March.

Emily Mayrath, spokeswoman and director of communications at NYC & Company, assured that her agency does provide pamphlets on attractions in the five boroughs at the visitor’s centers.

“We also launched an initiative with Mayor Bloomberg in March called Neighborhood x Neighborhood, designed to increase the number of tourists who visit these areas, support local businesses and encourage exploration of non-traditional tourist attractions in the five boroughs,” said Mayrath. “The program highlights restaurants, cultural attractions, retail shops, parks and other selected destinations.”

Olga Tirado, executive director of the Bronx Tourism Council of the borough president’s office, said that given the lack of information, “we are working on a flyer that will contain details on all of the borough’s attractions. We’ll distribute it everywhere in collaboration with NYC & Company.”
