Voices of NY has been honored by Queens Borough President Melinda Katz for serving as a “clearinghouse” for the best work of ethnic and independent reporters. “…it remains one of the only online publications in the United States that bridges mainstream society, immigrant populations and communities of color,” reads a Declaration of Honor signed by the borough president.

Katz gave Declaration of Honor certificates to Voices of NY and three community leaders at the seventh annual Iftar program hosted by her office at the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Corona Park on July 2. Iftar means “breaking of the fast” which Muslims do every evening during their observance of the holy month of Ramadan.

Addressing a sizable gathering of guests, borough president Katz also declared July 2, 2014 to be “Voices of New York Day” in Queens. She praised the borough’s diversity and the contributions of the Muslim community to the economic, social and cultural life of Queens.

The other three honorees were Imam Askia Muhammad, chaplain with the New York City Department of Correction; Talat Gilani Hamdani, the mother of Mohammad Salman Hamdani (an NYPD cadet from Bayside who was killed while coming to the rescue of others during the 9/11 attacks), and Shaykh Rafeek Mohamed, principal of Al-Ihsan Academy in South Ozone Park. They were honored for their commitment to pursuing justice, empowering Muslims through education and promoting interfaith understanding and community building.
