A century-old building in Williamsburg was recently renovated by the tenant and affordable housing advocacy group, Southside United HDFC – Los Sures, to provide better housing for the senior residents who have lived there for several years, Tanay Warerkar of Greenpoint Gazette reports. Among improvements to the building, at 201 Roebling St.: remodeling the 56 apartment units in the building; sprucing up the common areas and a side yard adjacent to the building, and the addition of a mural in the lobby to help promote a more active lifestyle for seniors.

“It’s truly beautiful,” said Berta Jimenez, a tenant at 201 Roebling Street. “When you are old it is very depressing to live in a place that looks sad. This building now looks completely different- very joyful- and it makes me very happy.’”

On Nov. 13, tenants and Los Sures representative were joined by officials, including Assembly member Joe Lentol and Brooklyn Deputy Borough President Diana Reyna, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the building.

“The work that Los Sures does for the community is great,” said Lentol. “They help make the Southside a vibrant and culturally reflective place to live. At the same time, they provide the necessary services and housing to make sure people can stay in the neighborhood, for their whole lives if they want.”

To make the renovation happen, Los Sures worked with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the New York State Housing Finance Agency, and DesignAIDD architects, among others. Go to Greenpoint Gazette to read about how Los Sures plans to renovate a former brewer in Bushwick.
