Garry Pierre-Pierre, who as executive director has led the Center for Community and Ethnic Media for four years since its inception, is stepping down.

In a statement, Pierre-Pierre said that as the center “expanded its scope and the responsibilities kept mounting, it became more difficult to fulfill that role” in addition to his duties as co-host and producer of segments for Independent Sources at CUNY TV. Pierre-Pierre, an award-winning journalist who reported for the New York Times and founded the newspaper The Haitian Times, will remain as an informal advisor to CCEM.

The Center for Community and Ethnic Media, located within the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, serves as a hub of research, training and professional support for community and ethnic media outlets in the New York City metropolitan region. The online site Voices of NY, which curates stories from the community and ethnic press and publishes original content, is a project of the Center.

On a personal note, Pierre-Pierre addressed the CCEM membership and journalists associated with the Center by noting that “it has been a pleasure working with you in the last four years. Many of you I have known far longer than that and please rest assured I will be working in some capacity in this media sector.”

Sarah Bartlett, dean of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, noted that “we were very saddened” to learn of Pierre-Pierre’s decision. In bringing the concept of the Center to the journalism school, Bartlett said, Pierre-Pierre “focused our school on the importance of serving diverse journalistic communities in New York, thus amplifying our public mission. Thanks to his tireless efforts building the center from scratch, it has become the ‘go to’ place for public officials seeking to reach immigrant and minority communities.”
