Celebrating Garifuna Heritage with Jazz

The Garinagu, who speak a language known as Garifuna, are descendants of Carib, Arawak and African people living in the Caribbean and Central America regions. Outside of those areas, New York City is home to the largest concentration of Garinagu, many of whom gather to celebrate Garifuna Heritage Month, held this year from March 11–April 12. As celebrations across the city wrapped up, Melissa Rose Cooper talked to members of the Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble about how they keep the culture alive every day through their music.
