‘Imams for She’ Launched

The 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which took place at the United Nations last month, adopted the goal of full gender equality worldwide by 2030 and drew thousands of participants from around the world. One group, Muslims for Progressive Values, launched a new initiative, “Imams for She” on March 10, a variant on the U.N.’s growing movement #HeforShe, which encourages men to support women’s equality.

In this video by reporter Kizzy Cox, “Imams for She” and its goals are described by Shafferan Sonneveld, global advocacy director for Muslims for Progressive Values, speaking at the International Women’s Day march before the initiative’s official launch, and Imam Shamsi Ali of the Jamaica Muslim Center in Queens explains why he got on board with the initiative, what actions will be crucial to closing the gender gap, and why more imams should get involved.
