Dominican New Yorkers protested outside the Dominican consulate by Times Square June 17 in support of the Dominico-Haitians who face deportation from the Dominican Republic as a result of immigration policies enacted in the last few years. June 16 was the last day to register with the Dominican government.

Thousands could be rendered stateless, writes Vania Andre for The Haitian Times.

“I’m here, standing in solidarity with Dominicans of Haitian descent who are set to be deported in the hundreds of thousands,” Emmanuel Pardilla, one of the protesters, said. “There isn’t a government in the world that’s denationalizing a group of people, and there isn’t a single international body that’s doing something about it.”

(…)

“Our cultures are different but similar in so many ways,” one of the protesters said. “We are brothers and sisters in one island, both colonized people who have liberated ourselves from [colonialism]. We need to build on that.”

Andre notes that approximately 600,000 Haitians live in the U.S., with most of them residing in New York and Florida.

Go to The Haitian Times for a video of the protest, and read the background on the immigration policies and what New York City officials said in support of the Dominico-Haitians.

  1. Hello,

My name is Arlenys Valdez and I currently intern for GenerationMe Media. Currently, we are looking for possible candidates to be a part of a television mini series revolving around immigration. In this mini series we want people to voice their opinions on immigration. Could you possibly provide me with the contact details of the writer of this article? I would love to suggest the author as a potential candidate for GenerationMe Media’s project.

    Many thanks,
    Arlenys
