Many members of the Nepalese community wear the traditional Chupa at religious festivals such as Buddha Jayant or the birthday of Lord Buddha which is celebrated in May each year. The Chupa is a traditional Himalayan gown that requires about 10 minutes to put on.

An immigrant from Nepal in Jackson Heights, has given a modern makeover to the Chupa, making it both comfortable and also reflective of the tradition.

Lisa Macabasco visits a monastery in Elmhurst, Queens, and speaks to members of the community about the importance of the Chupa in their lives and produced this multimedia piece for Open City Magazine.
