“He’s been a fearless leader for Red Hook,” one supporter of Carlos Menchaca’s told Kadia Goba of Kings County Politics at the May 13 event where the City Council member announced his re-election bid. Menchaca’s district includes Sunset Park, Red Hook, Greenwood Heights and portions of Borough Park, Dyker Heights and Windsor Terrace.

Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan, Queens) and City Council member Brad Lander (D-Park Slope, Kensington, Windsor Terrace) were in attendance, as were about 50 supporters.

“It’s definitely cold and rainy but I just adore him, I think he has such integrity and such genuine heart.” said Sunset Park resident Shira Sameroff, 47, adding she applauds Menchaca’s introduction of Participatory Budgeting to the community as well as his policy on immigration. “I think he makes a big difference for the community.”

Menchaca is the first Mexican-American New York City legislator and currently serves as the Chair of the New York City Council Committee on Immigration. His work includes securing funding for the public defender program for undocumented immigrants.

One 11-year-old constituent addressed the crowd, which gathered at the El Arco Restaurant in Sunset Park, and described how she was part of the participatory budgeting process.

“If this young lady who is 11 today, has voted, has mobilized, shame on us if we stay home,” said Velazquez. “She is here to remind of us that this is our future.”

Rumors are swirling that Menchaca will face a challenge from Assemblymember Felix Ortiz.
