Jumaane Williams – Next Council Speaker?

With incumbent City Council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito term-limited, the position will be up for grabs at the end of the year. Kings County Politics looks at one of the contenders, Council member Jumaane Williams of the 45th District in Brooklyn (Flatbush, East Flatbush, Flatlands, Midwood, Canarsie), who declared his run for the seat back in February.

The publication noted that Williams has secured funding for the construction of the $50 million Shirley A. Chisholm Community Center in East Flatbush – a multipurpose space with a gymnasium, exercise room and educational facilities – and sponsored police reform and tenants and worker rights bills.

But for all his policy, legislative and constituent work, it is Williams outspoken voice for the disenfranchised and communities of color that had made him stand out as a political leader. This includes not shying away from criticizing members of his own party, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, on issues of police brutality and economic inequality.

If chosen, Williams would become the first Black speaker in the City Council. For more on the council member – including his comments on how to be an “effective council member,” go to Kings County Politics.
