‘Little Caribbean’ Naming in Flatbush Premature?

Members of the Caribbean community gathered at Flatbush Junction to celebrate the designation of “Little Caribbean” at a Sept. 28 ceremony. The area encompasses Flatbush, East Flatbush and Prospect Lefferts Gardens.

The designation did not go over well with Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte, who called it premature, writes BKLYNER’s Liena Zagare.

The first Haitian-American from NYC elected to the state assembly said that while the name is welcome, “it has to be discussed with local community members.” More specifically, the Haitian community would support a “Little Haiti” and “Little Caribbean.”

“However, we were taken aback by the lack of engagement that has been shown to many of the elected officials and key stakeholders within the Haitian community throughout the overall process.”

“Haiti has had a unique position within the Caribbean…”

Go to BKLYNER to find out what that position is and how it has “excluded” the Haitian community in the Flatbush area, according to Bichotte.

Kings County Politics’ Kelly Mena noted that local City Council member Jumaane D. Williams, the designating council member, withdrew his support on Sept. 27, opting for a “more fruitful dialogue,” as did “Dr. Roy Hastick, who came up with the original idea, the local Business Improvement Districts (BIDS) including the Flatbush and Church Avenue BIDs as well as Crown Heights merchants.”

Bichotte recognizes that it is a review by elected officials, BIDS, corporate partners and city agencies in the community that will lead to a more complete designation of the neighborhood and a successful dedicated portion to the Haitian community.

“If all goes well, the designation of “Little Haiti” would be established first in order to be encapsulated within the designated area of the “Little Caribbean,” said Bichotte.
