After a weeks-long effort to amass donations for Puerto Ricans living in the wake of Hurricane Maria, the NYPD’s Muslim Officers Society and the New York-based Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) announced on Nov. 10 that a “massive shipment of goods” is heading to the island, writes Alexandra Simon in Brooklyn Paper.

“We are Muslim Americans and, like anyone else in this country, when the time of need comes we step up and help our citizens,” said Officer Adeel Rana, a member of the New York Police Department’s Muslim Officers Society. “As Muslims we can’t see a neighbor or friend suffering and just relax — we need to do something.”

Mosques and other religious institutions joined in collecting thousands of canned goods, hygiene items and other necessities.
