LGBTQ activist Andrea Marra, who has lived in Jackson Heights since 2009, announced on Feb. 6 that she is challenging incumbent state Sen. Jose Peralta for the District 13 seat, reports Angela Matua in QNS.

If successful, Marra would become the first Asian American in the state Senate and the first transgender member of the state legislature. She is currently the communications manager at the Arcus Foundation, which works for LGBT rights, social justice and conservation. Marra has previously worked at a Korean community organization as well as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and the Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network.

She criticized Peralta for being a part of the Independent Democratic Conference.

“New York state must serve as a defense against the real and dangerous threats coming out of Washington, but turncoat Democrats like José Peralta are empowering the party of Donald Trump,” she said in a statement. “We need new, honest leadership to protect and expand affordable housing; modernize the broken MTA; deliver the funding our schools need and deserve; and invest in New York’s overburdened public hospitals, including Elmhurst Hospital.”

In its story on Marra’s announcement, Jackson Heights Post’s Tara Law wrote:

Marra is running on a platform of protecting and expanding affordable housing; modernizing the MTA; increasing school funding; and investing in the city’s public hospitals, including Elmhurst Hospital.

Marra’s announcement comes the week after Jessica Ramos kicked off her campaign for the seat.
