In Sunset Park, older Chinese immigrants can be seen dragging carts filled with empty bottles and cans to the recycling center on 62nd Street. Many of them followed their adult children to the U.S. to help take care of their family and sometimes end up on their own. They turn to bottle collecting to feel productive and generate an income.

Photographer Janie Shen became acquainted with some of them and put together a photo essay of their everyday lives. As the accompanying text says, “For these grandparents, every bottle counts.” See the photos at Feet in 2 Worlds.
