France-Amérique Marks 75 Years

The first issue of France-Amérique, published on May 23, 1943

On May 23, 1943, “America’s French newspaper” France-Amérique published its inaugural issue in New York. The publication reports in a story on its 75th anniversary that at the time, the French community in the U.S. did not have its own newspaper. The Courrier des Etats-Unis had ended its run in 1938, 110 years after its founding, having been “ruined by the Great Depression.”

Go to France-Amérique to read about the exiled journalists who started the publication during World War II and the message from Charles de Gaulle, who led the French Resistance movement, printed on the front page.
