Hiram Monserrate, who served as a state senator and council member before being convicted for assault and later for fraud, is the new Democratic leader in the 35th Assembly District (Corona, Jackson Heights) after winning 54.42 percent of the primary vote on Thursday, over incumbent George R. Dixon who received 45.25 percent, reports Tara Law in Jackson Heights Post. Dixon beat Monserrate by only 57 votes for the same position two years ago.

The disgraced politician’s name cropped up in this year’s primary debates between Joseph Crowley and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and between Ari Espinal, Catalina Cruz and Yonel Letellier Sosa.

In 2017, Monserrate lost to Francisco Moya in the primary race for the 21st District Council seat.
