North Central Bronx Hospital’s new executive director, Cristina Contreras quelled longstanding rumors of the hospital’s closure. She told Norwood News‘ Joseph Konig, “I’ve been here for many years and that rumor has always been lingering.”

Instead, NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz said at a recent Newsmarkers roundtable, organized by the Center for Community and Ethnic Media, that services would expand at NCBH.

Contreras, who served as NCBH’s deputy executive director and chief operating officer over the past year, elaborated on possible areas of growth.

“Ambulatory services is definitely one of the areas we want to expand here at North Central in collaboration also with Jacobi [Medical Center],” Contreras said. “We’re really not looking to grow the inpatient; we’re looking to grow the outpatient which is the way the industry is moving towards.”

A story in El Diario/La Prensa by Pedro F. Frisneda highlighted Contreras’ roots as an immigrant who arrived in New York City from the Dominican Republic at the age of 15.

“I am proud and honored to have this position and the opportunity to represent Latinos, especially as a minority woman. I want our young people, our daughters, to see that there is the possibility of achieving the things that one dreamed of,” said Contreras.

“I feel like I’m carrying a lot of weight. Not only because of my responsibility and my position as an executive, but also as a Hispanic, as a woman, as a mother, because I am representing many people,” she concluded.
