Activist Andy Marra Named Transgender Legal Defense Director

The Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF) announced on Nov. 14, during Transgender Awareness Week, the appointment of its new executive director, Andrea “Andy” Hong Marra, who will join the nonprofit on Dec. 3. Currently the communications manager at the Arcus Foundation, the activist had run in the Democratic primary to challenge state Sen. José Peralta before dropping out and supporting Jessica Ramos.

A transgender Korean-American woman, Marra has worked with LGBTQ and social justice organizations for 15 years in a variety of capacities — including at GLSEN, GLAAD, and Nodutdol for Korean Community Development, a New York City-based empowerment group.


Marra is joining a group founded in 2003 that engages in impact legislation, in a lead capacity or by filing friend of the court briefs, to advance the rights of transgender, gender nonconforming, and non-binary Americans; provides public education and trainings.
