‘Asian American Life’: From Rep. Andy Kim to Ninja Ballet

The latest episode of CUNY TV’s “Asian American Life” looks at efforts by Asian Americans in the metro New York area to push the boundaries in the arts, politics and community service.

At a Chinatown elementary school, students prepare for a production of “Aladdin” with the help of Broadway star Baayork Lee, who grew up in the neighborhood. Watch at 2:30.

Get to know Rep. Andy Kim in the next segment, which starts at 9:00. He makes history as New Jersey’s first Asian-American member of Congress and the first Korean-American Democrat in Congress.

At 13:47 meet Japanese-Korean dancer Shoko Tamai, who intertwines ballet and martial arts at the performing arts company Ninja Ballet.

Finally, hear from Robert Lee, the founder of the nonprofit Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, which takes leftover food from restaurants, catering businesses and cafeterias and brings it to homeless shelters and soup kitchens. Watch at 20:10.
