Changes at The Forward


The Forward, which started publishing in 1897 as Forverts in Yiddish, and later as The Jewish Daily Forward in English, will go all-digital and cease all print publication this spring, CEO and publisher Rachel Fishman Feddersen announced. A recent monthly magazine, published in both English and Yiddish, will cease publication. The monthly had followed weekly print editions in both languages which were disbanded in 2016.

In addition, a reported 40 percent of the staff is being laid off, including editor in chief Jane Eisner, executive editor Dan Friedman, design director Kurt Hoffman and digital director David Goldiner.

Noting that The Forward reaches more than two million readers a month through digital platforms and that a third of its readers are under 35, Feddersen added:

From generation to generation, the Forward has been providing fearless journalism. Today, we pledge to continue that mission, connecting the Jewish community to its own story, and protecting and nurturing the American Jewish soul.

The publication’s opinion writer Batya Ungar-Sargon thanked her colleagues in a tweet, and other staffers retweeted archival photos.
