A Balkan Festival in Brooklyn

Step inside Brooklyn’s Grand Prospect Hall for the Golden Festival, a music and dance party held every year in January to celebrate the music of the Balkans. Meglena Zapreva, a festival volunteer, is in awe of the people behind the show – “people who grew up in New York and have never had any exposure to the Balkans but got exposed to Bulgarian music or Bulgarian dances have become holders of that culture and that treasure.” She adds: “They have done so much research and they keep so much of the culture alive in New York.”

While the festival has been held for more than three decades, a member of Zlatne Uste, the organizing band, explains why it felt like it “grew up” just nine years ago. Hear what he had to say in this BRIC TV video produced by Steve de Sève.
