Proposed Changes in Specialized HS Admissions May Hurt Asians

Two state senators have introduced a bill that would make admission to specialized high schools in NY depend on more than the qualifying test alone, and some parents worry this will exclude their children, World Journal reports.

Middle school students in the Bronx spend their Saturday in test prep classes in hopes of gaining admission to elite high schools.

The Science Schools Initiative began providing free prep classes to middle school students in the Bronx whose families cannot afford expensive test prep programs. The organization hopes to make the city’s elite high schools within the students’ reach.
